Differin

Made by Galderma Laboratories (an international company who researches, develops, and markets dermatology products), Differin comes in the form of either a gel or a cream.  The active ingredient in Differin is a topical retinoid named adapalene.

Topical Retinoid - Retinoids are a class of chemical compounds related to vitamin A.  Retinoids are used in medicine due to the way they regulate the way a certain type of skin tissue (epithelial) is grown.  Retinoids work by increasing skin cell turnover.  By increasing the skin cell turnover, old cells are purged and expelled which in turn unplugs the follicle of any congestion such as bacteria and oils.  By constantly replenishing the skin cells, retinoids also aid in the prevention of new black and whiteheads from forming.

Adapalene - Applied once daily after the washing of the skin.  If irritation of the skin occurs, the application should be decreased to once every other day until the irritation goes away.

What Differin Does - By the process of modulation and the growth of skin cell differentiation, Differin regulates oil production and works to reduce acne over a long period of time.

Effectiveness - Differin has both inflammatory and exfoliating properties, working to decrease inflammation and exfoliate the skin.  It is most effective on acne that is not inflamed.  Research has concluded that this drug is much more effective when used after a treatment of Benzoyl Peroxide wash.

Side Effects - The normal side effects in some cases of Differin use are burning, scaling, dryness, and a stinging sensation felt on the skin.  Of course, if any one of these side effects it is recommended to see a doctor and find out his recommendations on the continuation of the use of the product.

Conclusion - Differin, in its most effective use is a multi-part process, in best effect with a Benzoyl Peroxide wash.  If you are looking for a quick remedy to your face’s acne, try using something else that does not take as much effort.
