Tazorac, composed of Tazarotene is a topical solution for the treatment of whiteheads and blackheads.  It is commonly in the form of a gel or a cream.  Composed of retinoids (a class of chemical compounds related to Vitamin A) which are used in medicine due to the way they regulate epithelial growth of the cells (epithelial = type of tissue of which many glands are formed).  Retinoids are especially used for their treatment of whiteheads and blackheads.

Retinoids work by increasing skin cell turnover.  By increasing the skin cell turnover, old cells are purged and expelled which in turn unplugs the follicle of any congestion such as bacteria and oils.  By constantly replenishing the skin cells, retinoids also aid in the prevention of new black and whiteheads from forming.

Tazorac is a topical treatment sold in the form of a gel or a cream.  The concentrations are typically 0.05% and 0.1%.  The level of concentration depends on the type of acne being treated.

Caution with Tazorac - Depending on your skin type, and the way your body reacts to the chemical compounds within Tazorac, there are a number of undesired consequences - noted to be “common” side effects:

- Worsening of Acne - The treatment of white and blackheads can cause acne to worsen.

- Dry Skin - Due to an increase in skin cell turnover (in extreme cases, this also can involve extreme drying and cracking of the skin).

- Itchiness - Also related to the skin cell turnover.

- Redness - Effects on the skin pigmentation

Conclusion - As noted earlier, Tazorac is designed for the treatment of whiteheads and blackheads, but it is best left to that, due to common side effects which include actual worsening of acne and as the saying goes: “You can’t put out a fire with fire.”
